[Update]
-Japanese paused at the one-week mark following the monster earthquake and ensuing tsunami as the death toll continued its steady climb to 6,911, the National Police Agency reported. Another 10,316 people are missing.
-One of the worst-hit areas was the port city of Sendai.
-A large explosion has occurred at the Fukushima-Daiichi – or Fukushima I – nuclear power plant in north-eastern Japan, close to the epicentre of Friday’s earthquake.

-42 survivors have been pulled out of the rubble

-Third explosion reported, 3 cooling systems failing, 3 meltdowns can’t be ruled out, 1 spent fuel pool boiled over.

-No matter how much radioactive material is released, the worrisome isotopes from the Fukushima Daiichi facility are not particularly likely to follow a Chernobyl-scale distribution, Clanton notes. Even if the fuel temperatures fail to drop significantly, it is unlikely to produce the type of catastrophic explosion that launched so much radioactive material into the atmosphere over Chernobyl 25 years ago. The material at Fukushima also lacks the graphite bars that were elemental in dispersing the isotopes from the Chernobyl explosion.

-Region hit by hundreds of aftershocks, some up to 6.8-magnitude

-Rescue operation begins but some areas still cut off by road damage and flood waters

-70,000 people evacuated to shelters in Sendai
