Listen to this report by NPR contributor Claudine Ebeid.
I think this is some good press at least for such a reputable network such as NPR to be covering this story…
Now let’s get some facts straight:
1. Girls Generation (SNSD) did not sell out Madison Square Garden. Five other bands including SHINee, TVXQ, and Super Junior are all boy bands that were present at the concert and really, they were the selling points for the whole concert. The boy bands definitely get the most praise (hence fangirls).
2. SNSD is HUMONGOUS in terms of member count. Nine is definitely not the norm. Most groups tend to be 5 members large. The only other group larger is Super Junior which has 13 members (active and inactive).
3. In the article,Claudine lists as “21″ as not a k-pop group; first of all, the group name is 2NE1 (they originally had wanted 21 but it was already in use as a band name elsewhere in the world of entertainment). They aren’t a normal group in the k-pop scene because of their style of music and message but still widely popular. Other k-pop groups that aren’t the “norm” by being instrumental groups are FT Island, CNBLUE, TRAX, and LEDapple to name some of the more well-known.
4. Claudine botched the pronunciation of Hyuna… It’s like hyoonah. Not hyena.
Other issues:
1. Why use a song that is nearly 4 years old to demonstrate SNSD’s versatility as artists? She could have discussed the new single, “The Boys,” that has been released in both Korean and English versions and produced by Teddy Riley, of Michael Jackson fame.
2. Why were the girl groups only covered? Like I mentioned, the boy groups are actually the more popular. QED: Jessica Malasics (hauntedlullaby) wrote: ”TVXQ, for one, is way bigger than SNSD. They are even featured in the Guinness Book of World Records not once, but twice, as well as having been invited to appear on Ellen. JYJ (who were originally apart of TVXQ) have successfully held two concert tours here in the USA, as well as released a World Wide album, with their title track written and recorded with Kanye West. Three of the other tracks were also written by Rodney “Darkchild” Jenkins. They are currently working on another worldwide album right now and will release it next year, with another world tour. Also, the Wonder Girls will be releasing an album in the USA, as well as filming a Nickelodeon movie. Even still, there were two very successful large scaled concerts here in the US, featuring various idol groups. One was in New Jersey, for the New York City Korean festival and then the other was in Las Vegas, presented by Billboard.”
